Hostgator or Godaddy? What a comedy of blog hosting errors!
Well I’ve been around the world and back again with my blog in the last few days.
None of it has been very pretty! But the great news is I’m back! With a vengeance!
The short version is that I was recommended to go with hostgator because they offer Fantastico Deluxe and cPanel. I had been with Godaddy for a month of hosting my blog to get it set up and see if I liked them.
I did! That was the really dumb thing about what I did – I had no reason to change hosting accounts except that I’d heard hostgator were better for blog hosting. Hostgator have always had a really good reputation for support too.
Well, I don’t know what happened in the meantime but I certainly found hostgator way more complicated than the godaddy set up (especially for WordPress 3.0 which is an extremely simple set up at godaddy). I also found the support at godaddy to be far better for the simple reason that you can talk to a 24/7 Real person whereas at hostgator it’s a type chat 24/7 support line.
This is where the comedy of errors began. It is so much easier to explain anything tech in person, whereas when typing it’s like the old texting problem where you shorten everything so much the other person can get the completely wrong impression.
I had a host of hosting tickets with hostgator that just added up exponentially and took an enormous amount of my time. I felt like I spent so long trying to explain myself, being told that I’d got it right, only to wait the 24 hrs to be told that I hadn’t. Ugh!
But what was the information they needed to transfer my hosting account? I sure couldn’t work it out and I’d sent them every bit of info, password, username that I had with godaddy but it was never right.
Anyway, the result was that my blog was down for five days at the same time as I got a few of my articles on the first page of Google and in the top rankings!
Yeah, wouldn’t that just be my luck? Anyway, I sure learned my lesson.
Stick with what you know and what works. Regardless of other people’s reviews and advice, if something works for you then it ain’t broke and doesn’t need fixing.
Ok? Ok! Yeah, I think I’ve got it now.
While hostgator are probably very good for people who are a bit tech savvy and don’t need to speak to support in person, if you want real live (not chat typing) support then I totally recommend godaddy. Godaddy are very helpful, they offer good prices for longer terms (if you’re going to get found and taken seriously by the search engines then you need to have a long term hosting account for your blog or at least a recurring account, otherwise they may think you’re not worth listing as you may not be around too long!)
For me, I’m now sticking with godaddy as I have had no problems at all with them. The problems were of my own creation.
Luckily we live and learn and I’ve sure learned a big, blog lesson this week.
